Hey, it's Jeff. Are you wondering,
Hmm...Am I getting a good deal?
Do some Research. Look for similar items on sites like Ebay, Etsy or even Google and take a look at other crafty things that are out there.
Look at other local boutiques or furniture shops to see what others charge.
Look for vintage items, that have yet to be reclaimed.
See what they're worth in their unfinished state.
Now consider Unlearning what you've seen on "Reality TV".
On shows like American Pickers, they love to show you how much money they "made" buying a vintage item, and then turning around and selling it. You may have learned about this in High School accounting class.
This is called a "Gross Profit".
They kind of forget to include the costs of driving to the "pick" and home again, and all the other costs associated with making something neglected into something re-claimed!
And if expenses include filming a TV show and paying a camera man, and everything else, you know they're NOT making their money "pickin' and sellin'"
OK, back to the Deal-io. Some of our expenses are:
Transportation. Crafters have to drive around just like everyone else, at about 3.59 for a gallon of gas, to pick up finds, pick up supplies or deliver the finished product.
Supplies. We have to Purchase materials in order to paint, repaint or repair whatever we're working on.
Labor: Well, let's pretend we actually have to pay someone a wage to
re-claim an item. That never happens, but if it did forget about it!
The Unforseen. Sometimes the color is wrong, the finish didn't work out right, or some other disaster happens, and then we have to start all over again!
Deduct all these expenses from the asking price, and now you have a better feel for the "Net Profit".
Anyway, you get the idea! Although it's true that everyone at Reclaim-ologists and Other Crafty Chicks is in business, it's usually a don't-quit-your-day-job kind of business!
Thank goodness we love what we're doing, and we're passionate about it!
